BiographyLucía Martínez is a young artist with a strong background in classical, world and jazz music. She’s a versatile multi-instrumentalist and composer, and belongs to the new generation of jazz musicians in Europe, but with the flavour from the south.

Her style is influenced by folk music from Galicia, flamenco and Mediterranean music, all together with the new avant-garde music.

Lucía Martínez is a young musician, with experience and a really strong background in world, classical and jazz music. A versatile multi-instrumentalist and composer, Lucía belongs to the new generation of jazz musicians in Europe, but with the flavour from the south. Her stile is influenced by the folk music from Galicia (North Spain), flamenco and all the music from Mediterranean, mixing it with the new avant-garde  music.

         She was born in Vigo in 1982.  At the age of 9, Lucía started studying traditional percussion with local musicians and also latin percussion with a Cuban percussion player Marcos Valcárcel, before she began with classical training.

Lucía is the leader of the Lucía Martínez Quartet, a project which just recorded their first cd: ”Soños e Delirios”.

She has worked with musicians in the field of jazz, folk, traditional music, classical, such as Maria João, Perico Sambeat, Carlos Bica, Jason Lindner, Allan Ferber, OJM (Jazz Orquestra from Matosinhos-Portugal), Laszlo Süle, Orquesta ImaxinaSons (Jazz Orquestra from Vigo-Spain), Filarmonic from Galicia (Spain), Uxía Senlle, Mercedes Peón, Rodrigo Romaní, to just name a few.

         Lucia appeard on several festivals world wide such as the Festival Interceltique de Lorient (France), Folk Festival (Cannes-Francia), Music Festival Dranouter (Belgic), Celtic Connections (Glasgow-Scotland), Festival La Mar de Músicas (Cartagena-Spain), Festival de Ortigueira (Galicia-Spain), VIII Encontro de Música Antiga de Loulé (Portugal), Festival Imaxinasons (Vigo-Spain), Festival de Jazz de Vila Real, Jazz no Rio, Música no Palácio (Portugal).

         She studied orchestral percussion at the “School of high education from Galicia”(2002-2004), She is graduated in classical percussion in the “Conservatory of Music” in Vigo (2006) and she got the eight year in orchestral percussion in the Guildhall School of Music in London (1998).

Besides this classical training she focused on drums, vibraphone and jazz composition. She did an Erasmus Program in the Institute Politecnic of Helsinki Stadia and finally graduated at the well known School of Music and Arts (ESMAE) from Porto (Portugal) (2007). She participated in big-band, composition, vibraphone and drums workshops, in Italy, Portugal, Spain and United Kingdom.

Some of her teachers were Michael Lauren, John Hollenbeck, Jeffry Davis, David Samuels, John Riley, Garrison Fewell, David Friedman, Severy Pysalo to just name a few.

She got two awards in the important portugues jazz festival: Festival San Luiz in Lisboa in May 2007: the best musician and the best band.

         Right now she lives in Berlin: studying the Master Program in jazz at the “University of Arts” (JIB) from Berlin. Working as a drummer and percussion player, she belong to the drum quartet “Tim Tim por Tim Tum”, together with José Salgueiro, Alexandre Fraçao and Marco Franco, to the world-music project “Coplas para Icía- Xabier Díaz”. She plays historic percussion in the project  “Amar contra o silencio”, and vibraphone and percussion in the “Projecto Miño-Baldo Martínez”.

She also plays in different projects playing, vibraphone, drums, percussion, composing or arranging in different kinds of music like jazz, latin, folk, classic and contemporain.

Lucia is the leader and composer of Lucía Martínez Cuarteto project which released her first CD in January 2009: Soños e Delirios with Karonte / Nuba Records. She also leads the quintet Lucía Martínez & AzulCielo.

Besides she plays in different projects as vibraphonist, percussionist or drummer such as Projecto Miño led by the bass player Baldo Martínez; drums quartet Tim Tim Tim Tum and the Trio MBM (Baldo Martínez, Antonio Bravo, Lucía Martínez).

She’s currently living in Berlin, where she studied the “Master Program in Jazz” at the prestigious University of the Arts, JIB, (2009) which finished with summa cum laude.

In Berlin, Lucía composes music for big bands and sound tracks and also plays with renowned musicians such as Alexander von Schlippenbach and Sebastian Schunke.

She was born in Vigo in 1982. At the age of 9, she began studying traditional percussion and hurdy-gurdy at Universidad Popular de Vigo, where she came into contact with musicians who belonged to the folklore and oral tradition.
In 1998 she got the eighth grade in orchestral percussion at the Guildhall School of Music in London and in 2006 the Degree in Classical Percussion from the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Vigo.
She’s part of the generation 2002-2004, of the School for Advanced Musical Studies in Galicia (belonging to the Galician Royal Philharmonic) where she continues working with.
Despite of her classical training she has focused on drums, vibraphone and jazz composition.
She got a degree in Jazz at the Escola Superior de Musica e Artes do Espectaculo (ESMAE) Porto-Portugal (2007).
She participated on the Erasmus Program studying vibraphone and jazz drummer at the Polytechnic Institute of Helsinki Stadia in 2006.

She has also participated in Big Band, composition, vibraphone and drums workshops in Italy, Portugal, Spain and The United Kingdom.
Some of her teachers were Michael Lauren, John Hollenbeck, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jerry Granelli, Jeffry Davis, David Samuels, John Riley, Garrison Fewell, David Friedman, Severy Pysalo.
Among her awards, it should be highlighted two awards (Best Performer and Best Group) at the Festival vibraphonist San Luiz in Lisbon in May 2007, and the National Award for Chorus with Camerata ad Libitum 2002.
She has shared the stage with jazz, folk, traditional music and classical musicians like Maria João, Perico Sambeat, Carlos Bica, Jason Lindner, Allan Ferber, OJM (Orquestra de Jazz de Matosinhos - Portugal), Laszlo Sule Imaxinasons Orchestra , Royal Philharmonic of Galicia, Uxía Senlle, Mercedes Peon, Rodrigo Roma, Xabier Diaz, etc...
